David’s journey into design began in the 1960s, when he worked with film director David Lean on Ryan’s Daughter in Cape Town. Later, he worked with Stanley Kubrick on the 1973 film The Adventures of Barry Lyndon. Having become accustomed to working on a large scale, the transition to garden design was a natural one.
In 1988, David’s passion for the environment and love of growing things inspired a career change from theatre, film and television design to garden design.
They work on a wide range of garden and landscape design schemes, ranging from contemporary to classic and from country estates to city rooftops. Their designs are characterised by simplicity and style, combining traditional values with new technology and original ideas.
With 45 years of experience and a dedicated team, David Andersen Contemporary Garden Design is able to work closely with each client to ensure not only their satisfaction but also a garden that goes beyond their imagination. Their work has been featured on several television programmes with Alan Titchmarsh, Sarah Beeny and, more recently, Ravneet Gill.
Philosophy
David firmly believes that every garden, no matter how small, can ‘uplift the spirit and nurture the soul’. David enjoys relaxing, entertaining and playing outside, and he seeks to create this experience in every garden he designs and builds. The greatest successes have been gardens that use natural materials: wood, water, steel, stone and plants, with local materials used wherever possible.
Plants are great harmonisers, and it is their use that makes a place special and gives it a human touch. He always seeks to forge connections between spaces and people, and between the garden and the client, while capturing the spirit of the place. Every design is unique and bespoke, and he enjoys working closely with each client to achieve their ideal garden.
David’s style is pared-down, modern and open to innovation. He likes natural materials but is also open to using new materials and finishes where appropriate. An important part of David’s garden design philosophy is to be open to change and to embrace the fact that styles evolve.
If there is one thing that David Andersen is a stickler for, it is good lighting. Bad lighting ruins gardens. Lighting should be controlled, atmospheric and dramatic.
