This property, high in the Yorkshire Pennines, gave us open scope to create something incredibly different. The location was stunning, with sweeping, elevated views over the surrounding hills.

With challenging climatic conditions, a well-considered design was key to this scheme.

The back of the property featured a large terrace in pale grey porcelain, giving way to a planted slope that linked this main area to a large lawn.

We decided to include several raised planting areas, with cedar screens, to help reduce the strong winds. These featured plants with a strong architectural quality, and we felt the need to provide year-round colour, leaf texture and fragrance.

The client had collected several sculptural pieces on his travels, including Buddha heads, which we used to add interest.

The scheme also featured a large hot tub, elevated using decked steps. This provided panoramic views of the rest of the estate and the hills beyond.

We designed a large, metal-framed pergola with a useful adjustable roof and sides, providing the opportunity to sit outside even during inclement weather.

Overall, the landscape provided a highly usable outdoor space for the client and his young family.
